Northlake Nature Center presents the annual Great Louisiana Birdfest, held on 400 woodland acres along the lovely Bayou Castine. The Northlake Nature Center sponsors BirdFest during the spring migration when numerous migrant bird species pass through south Louisiana on their way from Mexico and South America.
Expert birdwatchers and novices are all welcome to attend any or all of the available birding trips, the social, and the photo workshop. Birders travel from all corners of the U.S. and from other countries to participate because the area is a prime bird watching location and the Great Louisiana BirdFest is considered one of the premier birding events in the country.
This year’s Photo Workshop will feature co-presenters John Snell and Mark LaGrange. John is an Emmy-award winning anchor and reporter at WVUE-TV in New Orleans who is also an excellent photographer. He has an eye for great shots and, because of his news assignments, gets to places most people do not.
Mark travels the US to fulfill his photographic passion. He has been a frequent presenter at the BirdFest Photo Workshops and gets rave reviews for them. Making this year’s workshop extra special: Mark and John periodically go together on photo shoots.  Following the workshop will be a Photo Shoot at the Pine Island Rookery.
A separate Sunday afternoon birding trip to the rookery, with wine and cheese refreshments, is also planned for the evening return of nesting birds.
BirdFest returns to the ever-popular Joyce Wildlife Management Area/ Manchac Swamp where the group starts by looking for songbirds at the edge of the Wildlife Management Area followed by a pontoon boat birding trip into the Manchac Swamp. The group returns to Big Branch National Wildlife Refuge with its endangered Red-cockaded woodpeckers and night creatures.
New this year is Possum Walk – located across the East Pearl River in neighboring Mississippi. This new trail was opened in the summer of 2013 and provides easy access to quite varied birding habitat.
Bogue Chitto River Reserve Habitats trip typically has sightings of a large number of species. The 1,786-acre site includes small steams, cypress tupelo swamps, a hardwood forest, upland forests and a rolling landscape.
Also on the schedule is the popular Honey Island Swamp, one of the best birding hotspots on the Northshore, particularly during migration. Containing mixed hardwoods and much swamp habitat, the area is within the Mississippi flyway and is bounded by the West and East Pearl River, making it a particularly good migratory route because birds tend to follow these north/south running rivers as they migrate to their summer homes.
The BirdFest Social will be held at a beautiful residence in St. Tammany Parish. As has become the tradition, Northlake Nature Center volunteers will dig into their personal family recipes to create a sampling of Louisiana’s delicacies. A tasty meal with a beautiful view. A truly special treat for all to enjoy!
