Yesterday I had lunch at Gregory in the spectacularly renovated Watermark Hotel in downtown Baton Rouge earlier this week. The building was originally the headquarters of the Louisiana Trust & Savings Bank; the restaurant is located in the lobby and provides beautiful views of the restored murals that adorn the walls. The prix fixe lunch selection was just under $15, and included your choice between two soups, two salads, three entrées, and the dessert of the day, which happened to be a dark chocolate brownie. Lagniappe-- a bucket of perfectly fried and seasoned chips. A bargain, particularly when combined with attentive service. Stop in the next time you're in the area.

Coming up: the Jam & Jazz Chef's Brunch is next Saturday, February 4, at the Rennaissance Hotel in Baton Rouge. Featuring Chef John Besh, proceeds go to support the Catholic Radio Network. Tickets on sale now, yours truly will be in attendance.

The following weekend, I'm judging the United Way of Southeast Louisiana's 17th Annual Got Gumbo? Cookoff. If you like gumbo, you'll want to put this one on your calendar. It's February 10th at the Royal Sonesta in New Orleans. Tasty. I learned many years ago, no matter how good the gumbo, taste and move on, because there are many more bowls coming.
