From the Publisher: Milestones & Achievements

Louisiana Kitchen & Culture

The September/October 2013 issue of Louisiana Kitchen & Culture goes to press next month, marking 18 months of publishing, so I thought I'd update you on our progress. Many of you have supported us with advertising, subscriptions and gift subscriptions, not to mention much-appreciated moral support -- thank you!

First and foremost, I'm proud to say that Library Journal named Louisiana Kitchen & Culture one of the Top Ten Magazine Launches of 2012. "How can you not like a magazine that has a 'Master Intoxicologist' and a panel of 'Tastebuds'?" The magazine is also up for two "Ozzie" awards from Folio: magazine, the magazine about magazines; we'll know more on that in a month or so.

Cara Ranieri (cara@kitchenandculture.com) is our new managing editor; Molly Hannen our advertising sales manager.

Ad space for Sept/Oct closes July 31st; members of LTPA qualify for significant discounts off the rate card. Call me at 504-208-9959, or email: publisher@kitchenandculture.com. Call Molly at 504-621-7968 or email: Molly@kitchenandculture.com.

Our weekly email newsletter has more than 33,000 subscribers and has an open rate that averages above 25%. It is a great advertising vehicle for hotels, restaurants, events, and sales, and it's very affordable. Ad space and materials are due on Tuesdays prior to Thursday publication; call for a possible extenstion.

Because of solid sales on the newsstand -- the March/April issue sold 15% above what is average for the Cooking category, and it looks like May/June did even better -- Barnes & Noble authorized distribution into an additional 55 stores (180 total now), and Kroger Delta just authorized 94 stores, both starting with our September/October 2013 issue.

On the subscription side, the renewal rate for our first batch of expiring subscribers is approaching 75%, an excellent number by all standards. As newsstand distribution continues to grow, new subscriber acquisition grows also. We are approaching 4,000 subscribers, which is just where my business plan says we should be.

We continue to distribute complimentary copies to Louisiana welcome centers, visitor centers, hotel concierge desks, and at select fairs, festivals, and events. I don't like giving magazines away for free, but we sell subscriptions to people we probably wouldn't reach otherwise, and we get your advertising in front of tourists, so I believe the investment is worth the money. The managers of the welcome centers tell me visitors are always looking for recipes, and that they really appreciate and enjoy the magazine.

We are actively planning our 2014 editorial calendar, and story ideas and pitches are welcome. Full length feature ideas; candidates for Louisiana Icon or Road Map; topics for essays; locations for Destination features; all are welcome. Call them in to 504-208-9959, or email to Cara: cara@kitchenandculture.com,

And as always, I look forward to hearing from you.

Best-

Susan sig
