Makes a Great Gift

It's Festival Season in Louisiana and there are so many around the state over the next two weekends I can't list them all in the calendar below. Visit our Events page on our website for a more comprehensive list.

Next weekend, LARC’s Acadian Village is offering guided tours in English and French during Festival Acadien et Creole weekend this year.  Allen Simon, resident tour guide, will discuss Acadian culture, history, and heritage, and the history of LARC’s Acadian Village during the tours. Tour Times: Friday, 10/11 at 11am and 2pm; Saturday, 10/12 at 12pm and 2pm; Sunday, 10/13 at 2pm; Monday, 10/14 at 2p.m.

If you find yourself closer to New Orleans next weekend, check out the Louisiana Seafood Festival at City Park's Festival Grounds. Admission is free; we're sponsoring again this year, and will have copies of the magazine for distribution if you've not seen a copy yet. Chef John Besh takes the WWL TV stage Friday night at 6:00 - you'll find us there.

Hearty Tailgate Chili

My mother was a simple country cook, not prone to experimenting with various herbs and spices -- she always started a pot of chili with a can of Hormel, then added beef, tomatoes, and beans and embellished from there. (Since my dad raised a beef for the freezer most years, it almost always had grass-fed, free range, hormone free ground beef in it...) Like many old dishes, individual favorites depend on what version one grew up with; beans and tomatoes are sacrilege to many chili purists, but that's how I like itI've worked on it over the years and this is my current iteration. Dire warnings of temperatures dropping into the high 60s at night seemed to make chili appropriate this week.

Football Weekend Quesadilla Bar

If you don't want to play short order cook, set up a propane portable burner or two and let guests assemble and griddle their own custom quesadilla; have plenty of salsas, guacamole, and sour cream on the side. Suggested fillings include grilled steak, boiled or grilled shrimp, shredded chicken, pulled pork, plenty of cheese.

Baked-Potato-Bites

Football Weekend Mini Baked Potato Bar

Another sure-fire way to please everyone. Bake off mini-potatoes and set up a varied selection of toppings. Let people mix and match to their heart's content; the potatoes can be kept warm in a crock pot or heated chafing dish, although the skins won't retain their crispy, straight-from-the-oven crunch. I'd like one with blue cheese crumbles and andouille bits, and another with chili and cheddar, and another with...
