Well, Geaux Saints.

To say Sunday's game was a heart breaker is an understatement; the bad officiating quite literally stole a second trip to the Super Bowl from our beloved Saints. But, in true Saints fan fashion, the crowd filed out of the Super Dome quietly, went home quietly, mourned and wailed and gnashed teeth, poked pins in dolls dressed in striped shirts, and started planning a city-wide party that will preclude any watching of the farce that will take place in Atlanta that Sunday. Stay tuned, we'll have more details next week.

Meanwhile there's king cake to be eaten! If you don't live near a bakery or grocery store that prepares the delicacies fresh daily, three of the favorites in the New Orleans area ship. But get your order in now; demand will overwhelm supply the closer we get to Mardi Gras. Check out the following, and order one for yourself:

This time of year, food banks around the country often struggle to keep their shelves stocked. If you have the wherewithall, put a few extra cans of food in your shopping cart this weekend and make a donation to your local food bank. Enjoy this week's recipes, share them with family and friends, and, as always, let me know what's on your mind. Have a great weekend.

Best regards,

Susan

Referee Chicken

Referee Chicken

This picture was emailed to us by Popeyes marketing firm after the Saints lost to the Rams as a result of atrocious refereeing (or lack thereof) on Sunday, robbing of them of their rightful place in the Super Bowl. I went off in search of a Fake Popeyes Chicken recipe to go along with it and to serve while not watching the Super Bowl on  Feb 3-- I'll be celebrating my birthday instead. You'll find the original picture on the Popeyes twitter feed.

Cajun Shrimp Stew

Cajun Shrimp Stew

Loaded with shrimp and potatoes, this hearty, slow-cooked stew from Emeril Legasse is perfect for the cool weather expected in most parts of the country this weekend. Once the prep work is done, it's mainly hands-off except for the occasional stir-- just the ticket for a lazy weelend afternoon\.

White Bean and Tasso Soup

White Bean and Tasso Soup

Another slow-cooked hearty dish for a cold lazy day, this soup is versatile. Read the recipe as is, then think about substituting smoked sausage for the tasso, and/or adding a can of diced tomatoes and chiles toward the end of the cooking time, and/or stirring in a handful of shrimp right before you take it off the stove. You do need some hot corn bread or buttered French bread to serve along side it, whichever way you go.

Shrimp Alfredo

Shrimp Alfredo

Authentic Alfredo bears little resemblance to the thick white glop you'll find in the inexpensive pasta sauce section of most grocery stores; the real deal is actually very simple. My Louisiana Kitchen & Culture subscribers will find the recipe on page 52 of the January/February 2019 edition; subscribe today and get your own copy. We're offering 1-, 2-, and 3-year subscriptions starting at $25.
