July 9, 2015

My sister flies in this evening from the San Francisco Bay Area; she'll be spending about ten days with me, and we intend to head out and see some bits of Louisiana she's not seen before.

We're starting with a family reunion this weekend and I haven't a clue yet what I'm going to cook to take; jambalaya last summer along with pickled shrimp; I just haven't decided yet. Should any of you have suggestions for what I should bring should I be invited to your own family reunion, please feel free to share.

This is the side of my family we trace back to the port of Charleston in 1682; great-greats show up in census records owning property, bits of which are still in our family, in Jones county, Mississippi, in 1816. Like many Southern families, my roots are deep, my family characters are varied and vivid, and my mind is open. You never know what's going to be lurking in any attic or closet, but it's never boring when you open the door, and if you stick around long enough, there's probably some good food invoved.

See our list of what's happening around Louisiana below and find something to do this weekend, even if it's just staying cool. Whatever it is, enjoy the recipes this week, share them with family and friends, and, as always, let me know what's on your mind.

P.S. My great-niece Jenna got a heart last Thursday! The transplant went well, she is doing well. She has work ahead of her, but this girl is a trooper; she's got a lot of strong women in her lineage and it shows. Many, many thanks, and much sadness for, the donor family. It was a thoughtful day -- and week -- to think about one family losing so much, but giving so much, so that Jenna has an opportunity to thrive. If you're not an organ donor, but you're qualified, do it!

Crab Remoulade Salad

Crab Remoulade Salad

This cool salad is ideal for hot summer days when it's too hot to even contemplate turning on the stove. Make a double batch of the remoulade sauce; it'll keep for at least a week, and is great on sandwiches, or tossed with poached shrimp or chicken.

Shrimp and Corn Macque Choux

Grilled Shrimp over Corn Macque Choux

My sister is flying in tonight from the San Francisco Bay Area; she says she's really looking forward to some fresh out of the garden vegetables. I'm going to make this for her -- she may be ready for the veggies, but I doubt she's aready for the heat!

Peach Cobbler

Peach Cobbler

Peaches are in full season, and a delicious peach cobbler is worth heating up the kitchen for. Top it with some home made vanilla ice cream for a great summer treat.
