Buy local. Eat fresh.

Gage and Evin Shrimp Cut Off, LA     Michael A. Slage, artist

In perfect rhythm with the seasons, farmers markets provide opportunities for the purchase of fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables, often harvested the very same morning.

The resurgence of open-air markets throughout Louisiana reflects a growing trend toward simplicity and knowing what we are eating. There truly is no substitute for shaking hands with the farmer who grew your market bounty.

From deep in the marshy lowlands of Terrebonne Parish come local vendors offering for sale not only produce, but fresh-out-of-the-water shrimp, homemade jams and jellies, and one-of-a-kind paintings depicting local bayou culture. The Downtown Houma Farmers, Fishermen and Artisans Market is open most Saturdays, weather permitting. The Cajun music is free and cucumbers are generally three for a dollar, but the stories told by farmers and fishermen are priceless.    5-21-2012

10 - 15 count is pretty good. Please post directions to the Market.

The largest shrimp, U/10 or "under ten shrimp per pound," were absolutely beautiful, but I went for the 10/15 or "10-15 shrimp per pound" for making shrimp fettuccine. The Downtown Houma Farmers, Fishermen and Artisan Market sets up on Saturday mornings outside of the Bayou Terrebonne Waterlife Museum. The address is 7910 Park Avenue, Houma, Louisiana 70364. Parking is easy and there are several good restaurants within walking distance.

The seafood shown in the photo was from "Gage & Evin Shrimp" of Cut Off, Louisiana.  Wild caught shrimp. No chemicals added. On alternating Saturdays, you can find them at the Red Stick Farmers Market in Baton Rouge.

Michael A. Slage is the artist of the seafood and hot sauce painting shown above. He had many more beautiful paintings on display.

Wow!  A blog from Chef Anne Parr!  Chef Parr guides readers to the soul of food in Louisiana and warms the hearts of natives and non-natives alike.

Here she takes us to the heart of Houma where the Farmers Market is sure to warm the heart with some local flair.  Even with the rain this past Saturday, I picked up some fresh vegatables and great tips for preparing dishes from the farmers that grew the vegatables.  I can't wait to try my new salsa recipe with the yellow tomatos I bought.
Thank you Louisiana Kitchen for bringing us a taste of Chef Parr.
