Welcome to Louisiana Kitchen
Memorial Day here in the U.S. was created after the Civil War to remember the Union soldiers killed in the war. In the South it was known as Decoration Day, and it was celebrated on different dates in different regions. Today, it always falls on the last Monday in May, and is meant to remember and honor all who died while serving in the US Armed Services. While we all enjoy a long weekend, let's not forget the original sentiment behind the weekend.
As a kid, it marked the beginning of summer. School was almost always done for the year, it was hot enough to go swimming, fresh produce was coming in, and, with any luck, a trip was planned to visit my beloved grandmother and cousins. To this day I look forward to the weekend, even though my adult sensibilities know that the freedom I had as a child won't return.
That said, we will certainly put something on the grill this weekend, and you'll find my new favorite barbecue sauce recipe for pulled pork and baby back ribs below. There are many events, fairs, etc. taking place around the region this weekend; see our calendar below and on our website to peruse your various options for entertainment.
You'll find us at the Grand Tastings during the New Orleans Wine and Food Experience Friday night and Saturday afternoon. We have a tabletop and will have magazines with us; stop by and say hello if you're there. This is the 20th anniversary of the event, and festivities started earlier this week. The Louisiana Seafood Cookoff determining the King of Louisiana Seafood is Saturday, May 26, during the final day of NOWFE; ten incredibly talented Louisiana chefs will compete. We wish you all good luck.

Gin Rickey |
My friend Debbie in Seattle drinks a Gin Rickey when she's not straying from her low carb diet. This recipe is from Ti Adelaide Martin and Lally Brennan's book "In the Land of Cocktails: Recipes and Adventures From the Cocktail Chicks" and it really couldn't be simpler to make. Gin, lime juice, lime wedges, sparkling water. If you're a fan of cocktails, check out the book. It's full of fun stories, illustrations, and cocktail recipes. |
