Mother's Day is upon us! We think giving her a gift subscription to Louisiana Kitchen & Culture is a great idea. She'll think of you every time an issue is delivered to her mail box. Of course, if you want to go the extra mile, get her the entire Collector's Bundle. That includes every issue we've published to date, plus the remainder of this year . Click here to order a gift subscription Click here to order the Collector's Bundle As is not at all unusual here in Louisiana, I struck up a conversation with a complete stranger in the meat department at the grocery store last night. We were comparing our favorite preparations for chicken, and the conversation meandered on to what we were preparing for Mother's Day. I mentioned that this would be my fifth without my mom, and my husband's first without his; we reminisced about missing grandmothers, too, then decided we needed to give each other a hug before we parted company. That's just the way we do things down here. I'm heading over to Orange Beach Saturday to help judge the second annual Lower Alabama/Louisiana Gumbo Cookoff. We'll have some magazines along to pass around, so stop by and say hello if you're in the area. Enjoy this week's recipes, share them with family and friends, and, as always, let me know what's on your mind.

 | Veal Grillades and Grits Excerpted from the excellent The Pot & The Palette Cookbook: Chef Goetting's food is driven by Southern inspiration and that's certainly the case with this dish, which has been on the restaurant's luncheon special menu for ten years. She describes is as "One of our favorites, especially on a cold day." We think it's a great brunch dish, no matter what the weather. |

| | Cajun-Fried Pork Chops Excerpted from the excellent The Pot & The Palette Cookbook: Fish fry isn't just for fish. Here, it makes a great crunchy coating for pork chops. If you would like your pork chops to be a little spicier, add some Slap Ya Mama Cajun Seasoning to the fish-fry mix or shake it onto the cooked chops. The recipe has three ingredients; anyone can make it. |

 | Pimento Cheese Biscuits If, like me, you love biscuits, you need to go buy Southern Biscuits. Nathalie Dupree and Cynthia Graubert have put together a collection of recipes you would not believe. This one works for breakfast, lunch, dinner, cocktail party, both of the recipes above, whenever. It's easy, too - most all the work is done in your food processor. |
