It's Festival Season in Louisiana. Labor Day weekend kicks off one of our busiest festival seasons. See the extensive Check it Out section below; there is no reason for anyone to be bored this weekend! You'll find me at the Louisiana Seafood Festival at City Park in New Orleans; we sponsor the cooking demonstration stage. Stop by and say hello.

I've written extensively about the need for aid and volunteers in the communities affected by flooding last month. Readers have written from all over the country to tell me about food drives, church groups and other organizations putting together plans to bring groups of volunteers down to help, chefs mobilizing crews to come and cook, etc. I am grateful for the support so generously offered.below is a partial list of the organizations seeking donations specifically for helping those affected by the floods.

The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank flooded; they are actively seeking donations to help rebuild. Until they can get back up and running, Second Harvest Food Bank of New Orleans and Acadiana is filling in; the Acadiana office has flood victims in their area also. They are requesting non-perishable food, cleaning supplies, paper goods, and/or cash donations; if you are not local, you can make a cash donation on their website. Every dollar helps.

Groups across St. Tammany Parish have formed STPCares: details here.

The American Red Cross has this page set up for donations.

The United Way of Southwest Louisiana has this page set up for donations.

If you're able, please consider making a donation to the Louisiana Flood Relief Fund by clicking here.

Grilled Shrimp

Grilled Shrimp

This is a double recipe - a great technique for grilled shrimp, with the added bonus of a great Corn Macque Choux recipe. Fresh corn is still available in the markets around here, and we've got big beautiful shrimp.

Cocktail Crab Cakes

Cocktail Crab Cakes

These bite-sized beauties will be a welcome addition to any gathering — from a Labor Day cookout, to a back yard football party, to an elegant hors d'oeurve at a cocktail party. Make lots; they'll go fast.

Hearty Tailgate Chili

Hearty Tailgate Chili

Chili purists will be horrified at the addition of beans and tomatoes, but that's OK. It just means there's more of the delicious stuff for the rest of us. And yes, the weather is still hot, but if we let hot weather dictate year round what we ate, we'd be in trouble here in south Louisiana.
